The sun is shining, it’s that perfect temperature and your morning commute has never felt so unappealing. Days like this weren’t meant to be wasted in front of a computer. They were made for fun! So you decide that playing summertime hooky is a better alternative.
You Deserve a Break!
At Yaymaker, we call this “taking a mental health day,” rather than the associated lying to your boss about why you can’t come in. And we do believe that it’s important to take time for yourself from time to time to prevent burnout…and to enjoy the weather!
If it’s been months or years since you played hooky (took a mental health day), we’ve compiled a list of things you could consider doing to make good use of a free summer day. And of course, each has a painting that you could create at a Yaymaker Paint Nite event that will remind you of your fun in the sun day off from work.
If you’re planning a beach day or some other type of activity where items could be collected, you can incorporate them into a Plant Nite terrarium. Just bring them to the next event you go to create a vacation in a box or a reminder of your escape from work.
Playing Hooky For Some Relaxation
1. Get Pampered
Just looking for a lazy day away from your email? A trip to your favorite local spa could do the trick. Treat yourself to a facial, massage, and manicure. You’ll re-emerge at work rejuvenated, refreshed, and glowing. On a budget? A DIY facial and manicure plus a bubble bath can be just as good.
2. Lounge at the Beach
Nothing says playing hooky like a beach day. Grab a comfy chair, an umbrella, some snacks, and a friend and you’re ready to soak up some sun.
While you’re there, collect some seashells, sea glass, and even some sand to use in your next Plant Nite terrarium. Your living décor will forever remind you of the perfect anti-workday when you let your greatest concern be whether you brought enough wine.
Seashells and other decorations shown in the projects for events are provided at Plant Nite events. Guest are always encouraged to bring their own supplies to further customize their creations.
Need another reminder of your beach day? Candle Maker events have beachy scents to bring the smells of the shore into your home all season long.
Playing Hooky For Some Active Rest
If you’re the type of hooky player that needs to be moving instead of lounging, here are some summer hooky-worthy activities you can do alone or with others.
3. Feel the Breeze while Out Biking
Enjoy the feeling of the sun on your skin and the wind in your hair as you slide through the streets without a care in the world. Biking can be the perfect transportation to get to your next activity, like the beach or to a local ice cream shop.
If you don’t own a bike, bicycle rentals have taken over the US. Most major cities have some sort of bike rental but if yours doesn’t or you’d like to try an upgraded bike, check out RentaBikeNow.
4. Hit the Green
It’s golfing season! Hard to pass up a perfectly cloudless day when you could be mastering your practicing your putting skills.
And if you’re so inclined, you can make a mini golf course terrarium at a Plant Nite event.
5. Unroll Your Mat
A day off from work is ideal for getting a mid-day yoga practice in. Smaller classes, more instructor attention, or more interesting locations are among the many benefits of timing flexibility for yoga scheduling. The therapeutic stretching will undo the damage you’ve been doing to your back by slouching in front of your computer all week.
6. Get Out on the Water
Combine the ocean and the breeze as you set sail for an afternoon. There’s nothing like being out on the water on a sunny day whether you’re fishing, sunbathing, or doing other water sports.
And of course we have Plant Nite projects with boats in them!
7. Go Bag a Bargain
Avoid the weekend crowds by going on a mid-week shopping spree. Get a head start on building your fall wardrobe or shop the summer sales to find the overlooked gems of the season.
Playing Hooky Outside of the Norm
8. Buckle Up!
Who says you can only play hooky for a day? There’s such thing as summer colds! Or, if you’re playing hooky on a Friday, the long weekend is the perfect time to take a road trip.9. until just after rush hour to hit the road with the windows down, the radio up, and no traffic in sight. Summer is the perfect time to explore nearby town for interesting things to do and places to explore. 9. Hit the Jackpot
Feeling lucky that your boss believed your sickness story? See if your luck can continue at the casino!
Get some sushi while you’re there. Afterall, casinos are just as popular for their food as they are for their games.
10. Wine About It
If you’re going to take a day off from work, you might as well have a glass of the good stuff… or a sampling of many.
Wine tastings are a great way to discover new favorites, local masterpieces, and fun wineries.
And if you get wine glasses from the winery, they can make great containers for succulents!
From a Day Off to a Nite Out
And to finish off the perfect day of playing hooky, gather a group to keep the good times going at a Yaymaker event! If everyone has a different vacation experience to memorialize in a creative piece, check out Design a Sign!
